Having a certificate in business and economics (Ecole
suprieure de Commerce, La Neuveville, 1990) I worked in bookkeeping for some
years, before studying veterinary medicine at the Veterinary Faculty of the
University of Bern, Switzerland. I graduated in 2001 and then undertook an
internship in veterinary epidemiology in the Monitoring Department of the Swiss
Federal Veterinary Office SFVO. During that time I gained experience in planning
and carrying out epidemiological studies and was involved in risk analysis in
the context of food safety issues. The following doctoral thesis (Dr. med. vet.)
focused on Campylobacter spp. in dogs and cats in Switzerland. I then undertook
a PhD (link
to thesis) at the SFVO, where I investigated the molecular epidemiology of
C. jejuni using different genotyping methods and with a stochastic model
assessed human exposure to potential infection sources of Campylobacter. In the
context of a Campylobacter genotyping project, I spent four months as a guest
scientist at the Veterinary Institute and the Norwegian School of Veterinary
Medicine in Oslo, Norway.
I joined the Epidemiology Division of the RVC in January
2006 as a research associate (post-doc) to investigate the molecular
epidemiology of African swine fever. All laboratory work related to this project
has been carried out at the Institute for Animal Health in Pirbright. Apart from
the ASF project, I have been involved in various activities of the epidemiology
division, including avian influenza related topics, a study on risk factors for
post-weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome PMWS in pigs, and epidemiology and
investigation of underlying population genetic factors for Protein-Loosing
Enteropathies in Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. Since October 2007 I have been
appointed lecturer in veterinary epidemiology and co-course director for the MSc
in Control of Infectious Diseases in Animals (CIDA). In this role I have been
involved in various teaching activities at undergraduate and graduate level
within and outside the College.
