David Brodbelt graduated from the Cambridge Vet School in 1993 and then undertook a residency in veterinary anaesthesia also at Cambridge. In 1998 he gained the RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia. After that he went into practice for three years, before taking up a PhD at the Animal Health Trust in the Epidemiology Unit, looking at anaesthetic complications in small animal practice (The Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Small Animal Fatalities, CEPSAF). After finishing his PhD he moved to the Royal Veterinary College in 2005, initially as Lecturer in Veterinary Anaesthesia and now as Lecturer in Companion Animal Epidemiology. He is primarily based in the Epidemiology Division at the RVC, though retains involvement in the Anaesthesia Section particularly with regard to the clinical research projects being undertaken. He is involved in teaching Evidence based Veterinary Medicine, Epidemiology and Anaesthesia to the veterinary undergraduates at the RVC and also is involved in the RVC distance learning MSc in Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health. Based on the experience of a large scale practice based study of small animal anaesthetic complications (CEPSAF), he is interested in small animal practice based clinical research. He is involved in the development of an electronic patient record (EPR) for the routine collection of data from practice computer systems and is interested in antimicrobial usage in small animal practice and risk factors for neoplasia in small animals within the RVC Oncology Steering Group. In Veterinary Anaesthesia, his research interest continues to centre on perioperative morbid and mortal complications. He is Secretary of the Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists.
