I graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Ghent, Belgium, in 1995. After short spells in mixed practice and the pharmaceutical industry, I joined the Epidemiology Unit at the Animal Health Trust (AHT) near Newmarket in 1997. As well as being responsible for the veterinary care of the departmental pony herd, my role was to provide advice and assistance to vets in practice on equine respiratory and infectious diseases, as part of the AHT’s Diagnostic Services. I also got closely involved in strangles research, especially the identification and treatment of Streptococcus equi carrier animals.

In 1998, I started working full time on a Horserace Betting Levy Board-funded study of musculoskeletal injuries in Thoroughbred racehorses in training. We were especially interested in how training regimens affect the risk of fracture and dorsometacarpal disease. This study required extensive knowledge of epidemiological and statistical methods, and I completed an MSc degree in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2002. I was subsequently funded by the Home of Rest for Horses as a Resident in Equine Epidemiology, which allowed me to complete a PhD degree in 2005 on the Epidemiology of fractures in racehorses in training.

I joined the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) as a Lecturer in Clinical Epidemiology in 2005. My research interests remain in the field of equine epidemiology, with a focus on the application of epidemiological methods to increase our understanding of the way that bone, tendons and joints respond to physical exercise and the pathogenesis of musculoskeletal disease.
